Cloudband Explorer for South America

As part of our work under the CSSP-Brazil partnership we (Dr Marcia Zilli and I) have worked with the The Institute for Environmental Analytics (Dr Guy Griffiths, Dr Jon Blower) to develop an Interactive Cloud Band Explorer for weather and climate risk managers and researchers. This webpage visualises all tropical-extratropical cloudbands identified in the South American Convergence Zone from 1979-2018. Cloud band events associated with regional disasters in Brazil in recent years have been indicated with particular case studies highlighted. Available in English and Portuguese.

What is a sting jet?

A short talk given in Paris as part of the AXA Research Fund: Pop Days training event. The aim was to convey the gist of our research to a non-expert audience. Some details are tailored for the audience. We actually use the Met Office Unified Model, not the MeteoFrance one, but the point is its a numerical weather prediction model. Thinking of a sting jet as an avalanche is useful, but only loosely accurate.

Understanding climate in terms of weather

"Visualising Climate" was presented as part of a public interest TED-style lecture series held in Cape Town, South Africa supported by the Potter Foundation.
